"Romanticism"September 10, 1873
Dear Editor, “What’s Better: Optimistic or Practical?” Several mislead souls in this world tend to darken their outlooks on humanity for unnecessary and even unhealthy reasons. These people believe that it is better to look and accept things how they really are, rather than hope for something better. This foolish concept is known widely as Realism. Essentially, realists are the people usually neglect all optimism, and look at all things candidly. Such practices can’t be healthy for one’s mind, and thus introducing the notion of Romanticism is crucial. Romanticism is basically taking a brighter and more buoyant view on things, having a little enthusiasm and eagerness is always a good aspect to hold! Romantics are typically more tender and passionate characters, whereas realists are generally more prosaic and halfhearted. Such an attitude can’t be healthy for one’s mentality! Romanticism helped numerous people get through the industrial revolution; people who otherwise may have gone insane. Thos, I must admit, at some points it is better to look at things the way it really is, but for the majority of the time, hopefulness is better, and in some cases may be your only was to get by in life. Another prominent quality of romanticism is imagination, and the ability to envision ingenious things. People with outstanding imaginations have the opportunity to do big things in their lifetime, whether it be writing a book that is to become famous, to direct a movie that is to make millions, or even to lead a country in a unique and effective way. Looking at things the way they are isn’t going to get you to places like those, because if you are a realist, than you probably won’t stand out in the crowd, and therefore will most likely never reach such a high level of success. Dawn Powell (1896-1965), an American writer of novels and stories once said, “Satire is people as they are; romanticism, people as they would like to be; realism, people as they seem with their insides left out.” She agrees with my point entirely, as we all should strive for a romantic view on society to thus live a longer and happier life. I saw longer because it is said that the happier a person is, and the more he smiles, the longer that person will live. Some realists may retort the notion that being a realist, and accepting the world’s uncontrollable forces that alter our lives, makes it easier to bypass the hard times and get through life, but a hope for a sweeter end, or a passion to improve and surpass expectations will get you farthest in life, and being a romantic is the way to go!
